Title

Socio-Economic Prospects of Punjab Farmers

Abstract

Agriculture is a backbone of economy in the Indian state of Punjab. Where, the majority of the households in Punjab state directly or indirectly depend upon agriculture. But, the state is under crisis, leading to farmer’s suicides, drug problem and illegal migration. Due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms resulted crops like wheat, cereals, mustard, vegetables have been spoiled greatly. Consequently, many Farmers in the state have ended their lives by overwhelming poison or hanging. Bathinda, Sangrur and Mansa under Malwa zone of Punjab are the most harshly affected districts of state. Punjab is state, where Green revolution was introduced in 1960 and has contribute largely to make Indian self-reliant in food, but when the difficulties were arising it was fighting a lone battle. All policies like providing them with grants and free power is not at all helping them. With time two main resources like land and water have sharply depreciated overtime. This crisis is causing low productivity, rising cost of creation, shrinking income and employment, depleting land holding, mounting ineptness and ecological damage. During the Green Revolution, production was improved with the use of genetically modified seeds that increased yield only when combined with expensive chemical fertilizers and irrigation. But, small farmer was unable to afford these expensive inputs and found that was not profitable because produce price less as compared to inputs. The most fret are the small farmer due to increment in cost of production, decline in productivity and reduction return. So this is the reason, farmer of Punjab is ready to quit agriculture and migrate to city or forced to committing suicide. In this study, further suggest innovative solution regarding social problems, ecological and economic problem facing by farmers. So that Punjab becomes economically developed state of India.
