Title

TRADITION AND MODERNITY DEBATE IN AHMED ALI’S NOVEL OCEAN OF NIGHT

Authors

Abstract

The history of modernity in India begins with the coming of the Europeans in general and the establishment of British colonial rule in India in particular. In the beginning, there was substantial obscurity in the process of Indian modernization. The British were initially only connected with and managed to introduce modernity onto the traditional feudal order. They were hesitant to promote an educated class among Indians who they thought could later prove to pose as competitors. Indians, on the other hand, interpreted modernity as an alien ideology forcefully imposed on them by the English. The Indian sub-continent is comprised of numerous castes, tribes, and races, each having different cultural practices. This new euro-centric orientation created a difference of opinion among the Indian modern and the traditional thinkers. This research paper attempts to analyze the influence of modernity on the lives of people living in northern India in the last two decades immediately before Indian independence. The emphasis of this paper is on Ahmed Ali’s novel Ocean of Night (1964). The novel is analyzed as a postcolonial text addressing the issue of modernity which is considered as one of the central questions in postcolonial discourse theory.
