Title

Oxidative Stress and its correlation with Liver Function Test and Lipid Profile among Smokers and Non-Smokers in a Tertiary Care Hospital Setting

Abstract

Oxidative stress plays a very significant role in the pathogenesis of many diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), atherosclerosis and lung cancer. Modern lifestyle including smoking may enhance oxidative stress not only through the production of reactive oxygen radicals present in smoke but also through weakening of the antioxidant defence systems. It has been an etiological agent for numerous chronic diseases, including a large number of infections, respiratory illnesses, heart diseases and cancers. A prospective observational study was conducted to assess relationship between the biochemical changes in the liver due to cigarette smoking and the association of these changes with component of lipid profile as well as on the inflammatory marker. 120 subjects were divided into three groups equally i.e., average smokers (n = 40), heavy smokers (n = 40) and non-smokers (n = 40). The average age of the study population was 37.71 ± 10.66 yr. Our results showed a significant change in the levels of total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, ALP, GGT were found to be significantly increased (p-value<0.001) in each group. whereas, no significant changes were observed in total protein, albumin, globulin and A:G ratio with (p-value>0.001) as compared to controls. The serum MDA levels were significantly higher (p < .05) in smokers than in non-smokers using Independent t-test or Student’s t-test. Thus, increased levels of serum MDA may be associated with the oxidant/antioxidant imbalance in smokers. To conclude, smoking prompts oxidative stress radicals production that may be associated with a change in liver function test. Further the effect on lipid profile has shown a correlation between liver & cardiac function, that shall be carefully interpreted.
