Kerala completes sixty two years of its existence as a state as well as a regional economy in the year 2018. Kerala has been experiencing a dual pattern of development at the economic and social fronts during the last half a century. While the real sectors like agriculture and industry remained sluggish with low productivity, while the service sector is marking rapid progress. Kerala marked better human development compared to the other states of India, however, more than one third of the people remains poor and one fifth of the labour force remains unemployed. Along with the substantial development of infrastructure, acute shortage and poor maintenance are reported in the cases of roads, power, water supply, irrigation, urban infrastructure etc. The stagnancy of the primary and secondary sectors has resulted in a draining of resources from these sectors. Therefore, the State is facing serious economic crisis with far-reaching adverse implications in maintaining even the existing welfare programmes meant for the poor people. In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the pattern and reasons of sectoral changes of the Kerala Economy since its inspection in 1956. For this study only secondary data has been used.
