Title

A Review of Designing Muffler for Better Acoustic Behaviour and Smoother Flow of Exhaust Gases

Abstract

Noise pollution is one of the vital anxieties of modern world. Automobiles are one of principal contributors in increasing noise pollution. Mufflers are used in automobiles to attenuate the noise caused by the exhaust gases emanating out of internal combustion engine. The mufflers have been in use over century and have become important component of exhaust system. Over the years they have gone several changes. The awareness created about the noise pollution and need to reduce it has forced designers to develop mufflers with better Transmission Loss. The muffler design is complex as it needs balancing of contrasting factors of Transmission Loss and backpressure. Designers are expected to increase the Transmission Loss at the same time reduce the backpressure as backpressure affects the performance of engine. Several methods have been suggested and parameters affecting the Transmission Loss and backpressure have been identified. It has been suggested that with the innovation of the computers, modeling and simulation of muffler design will give faster and better designs. Computational Fluid Dynamics helps in accurately predicting the Transmission Loss and backpressure of the muffler. The steps for efficient designing of muffler have been suggested at the end.
