The present play deals with the economic problems of the middles class; their difficulties to maintain a social status in changing society and their gloom soaked psychological world in which they had to live for full ten years without any hope of making an escape. The conflict between Tom and Amanda's attitude is reflective of the contrast between Southern puritanism and the new thinking of the contemporary world. In a way, both of them are deeply influenced by their respective social worlds and despite their best efforts , can never get rid of their social ties. Apart from the setting and the characters, Williams' use of symbols in the play, contributes in. creating the atmosphere of the Depression. Amongst these major ones are the fire -escape and the glass menagerie.
