Title

STUDY ON HETEROTIC POTENTIAL IN COTTON (Gossypium sp.) F1 HYBRIDS

Abstract

Heterosis is an important genetic tool in boosting the yield of both self and cross pollinated crops. The development of superior and high yielding hybrids are essential due to increasing demand of natural fibre products. This study meant to harness the expression of hybrid vigour from 25 F1 hybrids of five diverse cotton genotypes in diallel mating design. Highly significant differences among genotypes, F1 hybrids and parents were observed in some quantitative parameters. Highly significant positive heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis were exploited for seed cotton yield in all the hybrids, however, SVPR-4 x MCU-12, MCU-13 x SVPR-4, MCU-13 x MCU-9 and MCU-7 x MCU-12 were identified for best heterotic effect in seed cotton yield for all the three kinds of heterosis. The crosses showing fair degree of heterotic effects may be used as a selection criteria for further strengthening the cotton breeding programme.
