Title

A research paper on the study of Anti-toxicity activity of a Kashimiri gem: Inula racemosa Hook. F.

Authors

Abstract

Inula racemosa (Hook. F.), ordinarily known as Pushkarmool, is an imperative, acclaimed yet endangered medicinal and decorative plant of family Asteraceae. It has been cited various times in multiple Ayurvedic scriptures. Extracts prepared from different parts of this plant in the form of syrup, oil, powder, ointment, or tablet are used to treat numerous ailments. In the present study, methanolic and benzene root extracts of I. racemosa were compared for their phytosterol and flavonoid content. Their TLC profile revealed the strong presence of β-sitosterol, Stigmasterol, along with Kaempferol, and luteolin. Since, these extracts from Inula racemosa were found to be enriched with certain biologically active groups of substances therefore, we directed our efforts on evaluating its anti-toxic effect on normal (3T3 fibroblast cell line). Cell viability of methanolic extracts of I. racemosa against 3T3 cell line showed that the viable cells were around 85% at 25 µg/ml which decreased to 54% at 500 µg/ml. Concludingly, Inula racemosa possess essential constituents as secondary metabolites that can be exploited as a potential source for plant-based pharmaceuticals.
