Title

Public Health in Promotion of Health and WASH: A Case Study of Majuli, Assam

Abstract

Adequate sanitation, together with good hygiene and safe water, are fundamental to good health and to social and economic development. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Sanitation is more important than independence. “ This study provides sufficient evidences of the role of Health System in the promotion of public health and sanitation. The Majuli district of Assam state is economically poor and highly illiterate. The present scenario of Public Health system of Majuli has been revealed in the findings of the study. I am sure that this study would be of great interest to researchers, policy makers and development agencies while framing strategies for the development of Public Health System of Majuli district of Assam. The present study was conducted in the Majuli district of Assam state of India to study various aspects of public health, hygiene and sanitation, and the role of Public Health System. The study focused on affordable, accessible and availability of Public Health Scheme or programme for the people of Majuli district on public health, sanitation and hygiene. This study has been divided into …(write the names) chapters namely…… write the name of chapters and give brief explanation of each chapter) The results of this study would help researchers, policy makers and planners as well as development agencies in addressing various issues of public health, sanitation and hygiene and the implication of schemes in Majuli district of Assam state. During the past 150 years, two factors have shaped the modern public health system: first, the growth of scientific knowledge about sources and means of controlling disease; second, the growth of public acceptance of disease control as both a possibility and a public responsibility. In earlier centuries, when little was known about the causes of disease, society tended to regard illness with a degree of resignation, and few public actions were taken. As understanding of sources of contagion and means of controlling disease became more refined, more effective interventions against health threats were developed. Public organizations and agencies were formed to employ newly discovered interventions against health threats. As scientific knowledge grew, public authorities expanded to take on new tasks, including sanitation, immunization, regulation, health education, and personal health care. Sanitation is a burning problem of our society. About 1/12thof the world’s population still defecates in the open in absence of toilets, of which close to 50% lives in India. According to the latest estimates of the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP), released in early 2013 (collected in 2011), 36 per cent of the world’s population – 2.5 billion people – lack improved sanitation facilities, and 768 million people still use unsafe drinking water sources. The lack of adequate sanitation and safe water has significant negative impacts on health. This is a cause of great concern as 88% of deaths in diarrhea occur because of unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills thousands of children every year. But now a days it have seen that implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission in India from October 2014 to 2019 the previous data was changed. Rural latrine ownership increased considerably over this period .Asserting that the ministry is on track to achieve open-defecation free status for all of India; it said 110 million toilets have been built across India. The national sanitation coverage has increased from 34% to 99% during that period. Poor quality drinking water and sanitation is the second largest killer in India, malnutrition being the first. In this report, an attempt is being made to assess the status of Public Health System in promotion of Health and Sanitation among the community of people in Majuli. Randomly some areas have been identified to make a comparative and analytical study about the availability scheme of Public Health system on health and sanitation.
