History of humankind is a never-ending saga of violence and cruelty. How can we stop war ? The question seems to be unanswerable. However, following Sigmund Freud we would like to believe that civilisation is moving towards an eternal peace and cultural uplift man of human species can help in this regard. All the art forms can act against the deterioration of the human values, which triggers oppression, destruction. Film is a very powerful form of art, which has grown its strength over the ages and takes huge part in depicting and influencing social ethos. This paper will portray two of the milestones of world cinema –‘The Great Dictator’and ‘Gupi Gyne O Bagha Byne’ which have shaken the world and compel the humanity to think seriously against the dreaded consequences of the war. We shall make a comparative discussion and try to assess the impact of them on the society in their time and also their relevance in violence driven modern world . Finally we shall figure out some lessons for the modern day artists.
