Title

A STUDY OF THE PHYSICOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF ASSAM'S GROUND WATER SOURCE IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF BAKSA DISTRICT

Authors

Abstract

The water resources are oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, streams, glaciers, polar ice caps, and groundwater, i.e., water inside the earth's surface. About 97% of the earth’s water storage is in the oceans, which is normally saline water that is not permissible for human consumption. About 2% is locked in the ice caps and glaciers, and only 1% is available as fresh water for human consumption and other uses. A survey was conducted in the southern Baksa district to investigate the physicochemical properties of the drinking water consumed by the people of the southern Baksa district. The main goal was to assess the potability of potable water in light of the increased incidences of gastro-intestinal disorders and other water-borne diseases. The water samples were collected from twenty-five different sampling sites. The water sample was tested for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), chlorides (Cl⁻), total hardness (TH), arsenic (As), and dissolved oxygen (DO). Each parameter's mean value, standard deviation (SD), standard error (SE), and coefficient of variation (CV) were computed. Each parameter was compared to the World Health Organization's (WHO) and USPH standard desirable limits to assess the quality, and a few suggestions were made to improve the quality of groundwater in Baksa districts' southern areas.
