Title

Estimation of Ground and Excited State Dipole Moments of Indole Derivative by Solvatochromic Shift Method

Abstract

The electronic absorption and fluorescence spectra of newly synthesised indole derivative3-[5-(2-phenyl-1H-indol--3-yl)-4,5-dihydro-isoxazol-3-yl]-chromen-2-onehas been measured at 110-5M concentration in various solvents at room temperature. The ground (g) and first excited singlet state dipole moment (e) have been estimated from Solvatochromic shifts of absorption and fluorescence spectra as a function of the dielectric constant (D) and refractive index (n), and also by utilising the microscopic solvent polarity parameter ( ). This study shows that, the indole derivative has shown the greater dipole moment in the excited state than the ground state. The results indicate that the observed band in this compound may be attributed to π  π* transition.
