Social workers are in a unique position to advance human rights, both social and economic in the field. It is inherently part of the task to be the first to observe societal injustices in individuals' lives. In order to fulfil the profession's goal, social workers should help the underprivileged, educate the public about current issues, and support legislation that advances economic and educational possibilities for underprivileged people and communities. No other group have the same kind of first-hand information of what's going on at the grassroots level. The legal profession, for example, frequently approaches human rights concerns from a more detached vantage point; in contrast, the social work profession occupies a unique position. The strategy taken by social workers involves immediate, direct intervention, while lawyers and courts typically have to wait until a human rights concern arises. Attorneys don't go around the city seeking for violations of human rights. This is a social work capacity, but it also poses a practical obstacle to effective social work practice.
