Title

TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF AEROSOL OPTICAL DEPTH IN NORTHEAST INDIA USING MODIS SATELLITE DATA

Abstract

This study examines thirteen years (2005-2018) of MODIS Terra satellite data to analyze Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) patterns in Northeast India. A clear increasing trend in AOD levels is observed, with peak values during pre-monsoon months and lowest during monsoon and post-monsoon periods. Spatially, AOD hotspots coincide with regions of high population density, industrialization, and biomass burning activities. Analysis of MODIS Fire Radiative Power (FRP) data supports these findings, highlighting maximum incidents of forest fires and biomass burning in March and April. The study emphasizes the urgent need for robust air quality monitoring in the region to address escalating aerosol loading and mitigate air pollution risks amid rapid industrialization and urbanization.
