Abstract
ABSTRACT
The word communication is originated from the Latin word ‘communicatio’means sharing. It is a process of exchanging of information, ideas, emotions through speech, signals or behavior or writing. Two ways of communication: one is verbal and another one is non verbal. Using oral or written words for communication is verbal communication. Words alone sometimes not adequate to convey our messages. One can communicate by not using oral or written words but with kinesics, gesture, posture, space, dress code etc, it is called as non verbal communication.
Let us discuss the above in detail and know their roles in communication.
1. KINESICS (Body Language) A systematic study of the human body movements in the process of communication is called "KINESICS (Body Language). Here is a brief discussion about the main aspects of Kinesics. Personal Appearance, Facial expression, Eye contact, Movement, Posture, Posture, Gestures.
2. PARALINGUISTICS (THE LANGUAGE OF VOICE] The language of voice or study of non-verbal cues that go along with the delivery of speech is termed as paralinguistics. Sounds are the basis for Para language. It influences meaning and conveys messages. The important features of Paralinguistics are Volume, Pitch, Quality, Pronunciation and Pause.
3. PROXEMICS (DISTANCE/SPACE) This is the study of one’s territories. Basically, proxemics is the study of space and how we use it, how it makes us feel more or less comfortable and how we arrange objects and ourselves in relation to space. Public Space: 12-25ft, Intimate Space: 0-18 inches, Personal Space: 1.5-4ft.
4. CHRONEMICS (THE LANGUAGE OF TIME)The study of time management and its role on communication is called chronemics. Chronemics refers to the non-verbal channel of time, especially how people perceive the notion and the value of time.
5. HAPTICS (THE LANGUAGE OF TOUCH) Touch is the easiest and one of the earliest forms of human communication. Stroking, hitting, patting, shaking hands are the important modes and play a role in human behavior. To welcome or greet: Handshake. To show friendly warmth: hug. To express profound regard for a person by touching his /her feet.
