Title

A NOVEL METHOD OF SYNTHESIS OF 1,2-BIS (4- NITRO PHENYL)ETHANE USING A FISH TANK AERATOR & A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ITS CATALYTIC REDUCTION TO 4,4'-(ETHANE-1,2- DIYL)DIANILINE BY TWO METHODS

Abstract

In the present work 4,4'-(ethane-1,2-diyl)dianiline (II) was synthesized from para nitro toluene.Para nitro toluene was oxidized to form 1,2-bis(4-nitrophenyl) ethane (I) in methanolic KOH using a fish tank aerator, in presence of catalytic quantity of para benzoquinone.The1,2-bis(4-nitrophenyl)ethane(I) was reduced to 4,4′-Ethylene dianiline (II)by two methods,one by reducing it with hydrazine hydrate using methanol as a solvent at atmospheric pressure and Raney Nickel and in the other method hydrogen gas is used with Raney Nickel in an autoclave under pressure.
