Title

Gender and Human Rights Education: A Study among the Female Students of the Universities of Assam

Abstract

Human Rights Education (HRE) helps the students to bring consciousness among themselves on human rights thereby empowering them to fight against the human rights violation. In this regard Media, Civil Society, Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) and Educational Institutions (EI) need to play a vital role. So far as the violation of human rights issue is concerned, the women have been the soft target from time immemorial. Woman is not only considered to be second compared to male but also she is considered as secondary. In a patriarchal society like India, the crime against women is increasing in the form of sexual abuse, domestic violence, harassment at the workplace, acid attacks, trafficking of girl child to engage them in flesh trade, girl child pornography, child labour, child marriage, lack of equal wage for equal work, engaging child as domestic help, engaging the girl child in prostitution by drugging them, existence of dowry system and witch hunting, existence of burkha system and triple talaq etc. Considering the wide gamut of human rights violation, where women have been the victim, the knowledge on it has become indispensible for women. In this paper, an analysis has been made on the level of awareness of girl students of the universities of Assam on the basis of primary data.
