Title

Leveraging Semantic Web Technology for Querying Web-based Research Data

Abstract

The current web is not fully semantic in nature. There is plethora of ongoing research in this area for extracting knowledge from unstructured data residing on web. Semantic web is still in its infancy demanding lot of systematic research in this area to realize the dream of Berners Lee. HTML and the World Wide Web (WWW) have had amazing impact on the process of distributing human-readable data to even casual computer users. Yet these technologies are actually quite limited in scope: web data lacks machine-understandable semantics, so it is generally not possible to automatically extract concepts or relationships from this data or to relate items from different sources. The web community is attempting to address this limitation by designing a semantic web. The semantic web aims to provide data in a format that embeds semantic information, and then seeks to develop sophisticated query tools to interpret and combine this information. The result should be a much more powerful knowledge sharing environment than today's web: instead of posing queries that match text within documents, a user could ask questions that can only be answered via inference or aggregation; data could be automatically translated into the same terminology; information could be easily exchanged between different organizations. As one of the World-Wide Web consortium’s standardized technologies, RDF has the potential of becoming a widely accepted standard. In particular the lack of shared understanding and standardization of knowledge representation has so far hindered the success of this technology. The current research focuses on revealing the state of research in semantic web technology with an objective to discover new research avenues and opportunities for researcher by identifying research gaps, if any. The current research further explores RDF technology for querying web-based research data.
