Abstract
An oil spill is due to the release of liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially the marine ecosystem, due to human activity, and to the environment. Oil spills can be caused due to the release of crude oil from tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs, wells, refined petroleum products among others. Oil spill is a problem that has confronted oil companies and Environmental Protection Agencies since the early 19th century. Oil spills can cause destruction to marine ecology, relocation and payment of compensation to affected communities.
