Title

TESTING APPROACH FOR AERO ENGINE EMBEDDED SOFTWARE

Abstract

A safety critical software system is a computer system whose failure or malfunction may severely affect human life, environment or equipment. Modern day aero-engines intended for military aircraft applications are invariably configured with Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system consisting of safety critical embedded software. Among the several advantages of FADEC with safety critical embedded controller software, the pilot workload and ease of handling of the engine are significant for a manned application. The FADEC safety critical embedded controller software with takes the pilot input in terms of the thrust by way of the power level setting, and based on the state of the engine and the flight conditions, controls the engine so as not to exceed any of the limiting parameters of the engine while at the same time providing the best response times. The pilot has to only intervene in case of a fault condition by way of, for example, forcefully changing the controlling channel in a twin-lane configuration or to changeover to a manual fuel control mode. To accommodate such various forms of cross cultural data, safety critical embedded controller software is tested adequately to configure it to provide the necessary quality & reliability for safe flight.
