Green Consumerism: Extent of Environmental Concern Exhibited By the Homemakers of Vadodara City While Buying Selected Household Products

Abstract

The environment is the sum total of all social, economic, biological, physical and chemical factors which constitute the surroundings of the human being. Ever increasing human population has exploited the resources from the environment which are so essential for the substance of all life on the earth. The environment has been deteriorating constantly. Its present status has come due to the industrialization, urbanization, and unrestrained growth of human population and the mismanagement of the world’s environment. However, in the late twentieth century, the world had recognized the need to protect the environment for sustainable development, which means the development that seeks to meet the need and aspiration of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future. This has drowned the attention of the people to assess the environmental impact of whatever they do or purchase or the way of life they live. Keeping this philosophy in mind a research study was conducted to know the extent of environmental concern exhibited by the homemakers of Vadodara city while buying selected household products. Methodology: The research design of the present investigation descriptive research. A sample of 192 homemakers was selected through purposive sampling. Samples were contacted through the snowball technique. Only those homemakers who purchased and prepared food by themselves only were selected from various parts of Vadodara city an interview schedule was prepared as was assumed that the educational level of the sample would vary from illiterate to highly educated people. The schedule contained scales to assess the extent of environment-friendly buying behavior. Major findings: Majority of the respondents followed the most environment-friendly behavior while buying milk, ketchup, jams, food grains, tea leaves and cooking oil packed in different packaging material. Regarding purchasing of coffee powder and cold drinks two third and one-third of respondents respectively followed the least environment-friendly behavior. Least environment-friendly behavior was exhibited by the wide majority of homemakers while purchasing disposable cups/ plates and dry products; while purchasing electrical appliances and plates for a small party.
