Title

Squalene, Biosynthesis and its role in production of bioactive compounds, a Proper Scientific Challenge – A Review

Abstract

Squalene is an isoprenoids unit of polyunsaturated hydrocarbon, naturally present in all plant sources. An emphasis has been placed upon the intensive investigations on account of its various potential therapeutic activities. It is an intermediate metabolite or precursor for bioactive compounds like cholesterol, sterol, hapanoid, hormones, vitamins and triterpenoids in various organisms from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. It is present in large quantities in liver oil of shark but it is considerably present in various plants - derived oil; such as olive oil, palm oil, wheat-germ oil, amaranth oil and rice bran oil. Squalene is used to treat variety of cancers and to reduce blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. Due to its increasing roles in cosmetic, nutroceutics, pharmaceutical and automobile industries, the demand for this compound is high. Squalene is structurally related to β-carotene, coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) , vitamins A, E and K. In this review, we accounted its occurrence, structure, physical and chemical properties, and its biological significance in food, human health, cosmetic and pharmaceutics. In addition, its biosynthesis and its role as a precursor for many bioactive compounds also discussed.
