The postcolonial world faces innumerable crisis which affects the psyche of individuals and even society. Quest for identity, alienation, rootlessness are some of the major traumatic ones which affect persons and sometimes a society as a whole. Literature being a reflection of the contemporary world, writers of various genres transacted these psychological problems through their works.. Alienation can be physical, emotional, political and social which in turn leads to alienation leads to identity crisis and existential angst. The sense of alienation makes a person a complete stranger to himself and to his immediate world. Quite a number of fiction writers dealt with the theme of alienation and rootlessness in their works in the second half of the 20th century. The sense of self-estrangement and isolation of the characters are sketched with vividness by these writers. They realized that adapting to the changing world is the only way out for a complacent and contented state of existence.
