This study is concerned with the hardware elements of electric vehicles and stationary applications in the Battery Management Systems (BMS). The aim is to provide an overview of current concepts in state-of-the-art systems and enable readers to estimate what needs to be considered to develop a BMS for a particular app. Following a brief study of the general requirements, many alternative battery pack topologies and their repercussions for the complexity of the BMS are considered. Examples are four battery packs taken from widely accessible electric automobiles. Subsequently, implementing components of measuring the physical variables necessary (voltage, current, temperature, etc), and balancing problems and techniques, will be examined. Finally, questions of safety and reliability are examined.
