Title

Effect of Increase in Temperature on Lithium-ion Battery used in Electric Vehicles - A Review

Abstract

Environmental pollution and the energy crisis both are becoming serious, so all countries are focusing on renewable energy. As a typical representative of the renewable energy industry, electric vehicles have attracted worldwide interest due to their cleanness. However, the function of an EV is restricted by its power battery. It has been found that the life of the battery and work capacity is highest when the operating temperature of the Lithium-Ion battery is in the range of 25–45 0C. Unfortunately, the battery temperature is not rated best during actual operation. Heat generation is approximately proportional to the amount of power drawn from the cells due to the internal resistance of the battery. The resistance offered by the battery will rise when the operating temperature is lower than 0 0C, which can greatly influence the output of the battery. On the other side, the speed of the battery’s side reaction will accelerate when the temperature is too high, and the battery capacity will be greatly reduced. A battery fire, explosion, or other incidents can also happen due to a high temperature. The heat dissipation of the battery is of utmost importance for the safe and durable working of the EV. The purpose of a battery cooling system is to keep the cells within its optimal temperature range, which offers the best balance between performance and ageing. The distribution of temperature within the battery pack should be even because temperature could result in differential ageing levels between cells and thus different charge and discharge behaviour for each cells.
