Title

Dukaribala Devi-An Unsung Female Freedom Fighter from Birbhum

Authors

Abstract

Dukaribala Devi of Birbhum's remote village Jhaupara is one of the unsung heroine of India's freedom struggle who showed agitation against British power. She was born in a middle-class Brahmin family on 22nd July , 1887 at Jhaupara village under Nalhati police station in Birbhum district in undivided Bengal. Dukaribala Devi’s nephew, Nibaran Ghatak , was member of a revolutionary group and she was deeply influenced by the thoughts and concepts propagated by him and his group. The initiation of Dukaribala Devi into revolutionary mantra made Jhaupara a secret center of revolutionaries. The forested village on the banks of the river is therefore a suitable place for weapons training and for sheltering in secret. The movement of revolutionaries increased. She was now the unanimous ‘Masima’ (aunt) of all the revolutionaries of the group. She had to go to jail for two years for the crime of possessing weapons without a license that belonged to the the revolutionaries.
