Title

NON-PERFORMING ASSETS OF PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS AND PRIVATE SECTOR BANKS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO AGRICULTURAL LOANS IN UTTAR PRADESH; AN ANALYTICAL STUDY

Abstract

This paper examines the concerns and issues on Non-Performing Assets of Public and Private Banks’ Agricultural Loans in Uttar Pradesh, India. The study was done to find out the reasons behind the increasing number of NPAs due to Agriculture Loans. Agriculture is the main source of income for about 58 percent of India's population. Indian Government, Private and Public sector Banks are constantly working for the development of the agriculture sector However, banks do face the major problem of Non Performing Assets which decreases their profitability and tends to decrease the payment of credit among the farmers. An action is taken to find out the causes of non-performance of farmers and also the plans are designed to overcome these credit risks. This is for sure that NPAs can be reduced however, can’t be avoided. The purpose of study was to determine the cause of the rising number of non-performing loans associated with agriculture. An effort is made to determine the reasons for the low debt collection with the aid of a survey schedule and a structured questionnaire. The statistical tools applied for the study are mean, standard deviation and Z-test. The commercial banks play a significant role in the banking sector in India. These banks lend money and provide advances to various societal segments. The majority of private sector banks failed to attain the sub-targets within the priority sector, indicating that their performance in the area of lending to the priority sector remained below adequate levels. Net bank credit advances to these banks' weakest segments are much less than the industry goal. The government mandates that public sector banks lend primarily (40%) at discounted rates to the priority sector in order to boost and assist the rural areas. This paper examines the problem of NPAs of Banks in agriculture in Uttar Pradesh, factors of low repayment and suggests measures to reduce these NPAs and strengthen the Indian economy.
