Title

Hepatoprotective Potential of Zingiber officinale Extract Against Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats: An Evaluation Study

Abstract

This study investigated the hepatoprotective potential of the methanolic extract derived from the Zingiber officinale (Zingiberaceae) against acetaminophen-induced liver damage in rats. The underlying principle was based on the association between acetaminophen administration and the development of oxidative stress, resulting in disturbances in hepatospecific serum markers. Treatment with the methanol extract of Zingiber officinale administered prior to acetaminophen, significantly mitigated the disruption in liver function. Liver functions were assessed through measurements of total protein, total bilirubin, ALP, ALT, and AST. Additionally, oxidative stress parameters and antioxidant markers were evaluated. Histopathological examination was conducted to assess liver conditions, focusing on inflammatory infiltration or necrosis. To ensure the safety of the extract, animals were closely monitored for any signs of toxicity following its administration. In conclusion, the findings suggest that the methanol extract of Zingiber officinale holds promise as a hepatoprotective agent, demonstrating the ability to attenuate acetaminophen-induced liver damage and maintain liver function.
