Abstract Odissi music, one of the classical traditions of India, stands out for its rich spiritual, aesthetic, and historical foundations. Rooted in ancient scriptures like the Nāṭyaśāstra and supported by archaeological and literary evidence, it possesses a well-codified structure of ragas and talas. Integral to Odisha’s religious and cultural life, particularly in temple rituals and folk theatre, Odissi music reflects a seamless blend of performance, devotion, and scholarship. Through texts like Gītagovinda and Gīta Prakāśa, and sustained through the guru-shishya tradition, Odissi music fulfills all criteria of classicality, warranting further recognition and preservation
