Title

Multiplicity, Medium, and Meaning-Making in Durarara!!: A Comparative Study

Authors

Abstract

This paper examines Durarara!! by Ryohgo Narita as a transmedial narrative that operates differently across its textual and visual forms. Drawing on adaptation theory, narratology, and Barthes’s distinction between “writerly” and “readerly” texts, the essay argues that the light novel and the anime should not be positioned in hierarchical superiority but as mutually illuminating narrative ecologies. The article contends that the novel and the animated series each activate different semiotic modalities, and that their divergences are rooted not in fidelity or infidelity, but in medium-specific affordances and industrial constraints. The study therefore rejects reductive “better versus inferior” binaries and instead argues that Durarara!! demonstrates how contemporary Japanese popular culture performs meaning not through one privileged medium, but through the supplementary interplay of text and image.
