Abstract
Teaching and learning of a foreign language like English in a non-native country like India is a herculean task and a huge challenge for its stakeholders. Ever increasing importance of English as a global lingua franca, a language of opportunity, a tool of empowerment and an essential requisite of a good and lucrative career across the globe has made it bible-like significant in the life of modern strugglers. With the explosion of modern technological innovations and increasingly growing role of English as a driver of globalization and dominating medium of modern technology, teaching and learning of English has become very important across the globe. Considering the phenomenon, non-native countries like China and India are doing its best to promote the quality teaching learning of English with its well-established academia. However, unfortunately the ‘traditional centers of learning’ are miserably and badly failing to build their ESL’s ‘English language proficiency’. As a result of this, in spite of spending valuable 10-12 years of learning by average Indian students, especially from rural area, we still find that they could not develop their ‘English language proficiency’. It also calls ELT scholars attention to the burning phenomenon that there is a grave problem of ‘real English learning experience’ in rural area as the whole ELT mechanics is badly failing to address the thing called effective English teaching learning in all over India, especially in rural area. So, this calls for a paradigm shift in the way we Indian teach and learn English and the tools, techniques, strategies, methods and approaches we deploy for acquiring it. So, the present research paper proposes a new approach and methodology called ‘MMAELL’as a new technological innovation in ELT, especially for Indian rural classes. The research paper proposes and introduces a new concept called ‘MMAELL’as a practical and effective alternative for the present-day ELT armory that will surely go a long way in improving the rural ESL’s learning experience with English and produce astonishing results. The term ‘MMAELL’ is coined by the researcher to designate the practice and theory of learning English with the help of modern-day mass-media. The term stands for ‘mass media –assisted English Language learning’. Unlike other modern methods and approaches like CALL. MALL, TELL, etc., the proposed ‘MMAELL’ approach and methodology implies the idea of yoking the educational and academic merits of the mass media with teaching learning process of English in India. The present research paper intends to understand and employ the usability of the mass media pro-linguistic virtues for the effective and efficient learning of English in Indian ELT classes. It also highlights the role of mass media as an excellent audio-visual aid, quality English language building tool and resource and pro-language learning educational technology in the underprivileged areas of rural India. It is strongly supported by the practical findings of the doctoral research study conducted in Hingoli district of Maharashtra. It reveals that Indian ESL’s, particularly from rural area, can effectively develop their LSRW skills along with its integral aspects like body language, mannerism, soft skills, pronunciation and grammar awareness by adopting the method. It also celebrates learner’s autonomy and independence, makes allowance for pro-active participation in learning process, and considers the value of interest, exposure and audio-visual element in language learning process. In a nut shell, the present research paper proposes and introduces a new methodology and approach called ‘MMAELL’ as a new innovation in ELT and underlines its utility as a learning tool, resource and excellent audio visual aids building the rural ESL’s ‘English language proficiency’ faster and efficiently than the traditional approaches, methods and tools.
