Montmorillonite is hydrated soft phyllosilicate, a member of smectite family, having two tetrahedral sheets sandwiching a central octahedral sheet, distributed widely in the Rajmahal hills of Jharkhand and Hazaribagh district too. Work on X-rays and thermal studies of some samples of montmorillonite minerals have been done with a view to characterize the mineral. FTIR of some samples of montmorillonite minerals have been done to detect the functional groups present. Diffraction patterns of the mineral consist peaks of montmorillonite minerals. A loss of mass shows the loss of molecular water and dehydroxylation.
