The purpose of this paper is to expose the strong minds of the West-Africans, known as Nigerians, who never betrays their own Tradition and Culture for the sake of the Westerners. “The Lion and the Jewel”, by the significant Nigerian Dramatist, Wole Soyinka, who has received his Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, was also attained the popularity for being the first African to receive the Nobel Prize, serves as a tool to depict the adamant nature of Nigerians both in subjugating the women and curbing the penetration of other culture into their land. This play “Lion and the Jewel” is an attempt to bring out the Yoruba Culture to the light and it also emphasizes the importance of the uncorrupt Nigerian society. Soyinka sets this play as an advice to the youngsters of Nigeria not to give away their own custom and heritage by ensuing the culture of the ‘Occidents’. This paper also brings out the inherent qualities of Yoruba culture such as polygamy, bride-price, women suppression infused with dance and music.
