J. M. Coetzee is a prodigious South African writer and his merit has been acknowledged across the literary world today. As a recipient of many famous literary awards he captures the attention of many readers. As a witness to the torments of colonization in South Africa, he offers a realistic presentation of the hard realities of the colonized world. His writings, composed against the background of the postcolonial setting, deal with the themes of ambivalence, racial discrimination, human isolation, affliction and endurance. He also offers an insight and interprets the elements that worsen the life situations of the natives and infringe their rights. J. M. Coetzee’s Life and Times of Michael K is considered to be one of his best novels as it culls out the dark realities of cultural diversity and displacement. It also exemplifies the deplorable conditions in which the protagonist is fettered and dehumanized. This paper focuses on disclosing the predicaments the natives face and factors that ostracize them into desolation.
