Title

Experience and Expression: A Study of Women Oppression in the Select Indian Novels by Women

Abstract

One of the predominant binary mentioned above, i.e., Man vs Woman would by and large cover the various binary categories addressed. This binary has definitely shaped how the women are inferior, enslaved, oppressed and treated cruelly in the predominantly patriarchal set up. The entirety of humanity has subjugated women on the basis of sheer physical ability that they continue to be perceived as mediocre and less capable beings. It was during the late 17th century and the early 18th century that women slowly started expressing their struggles and challenges of being women in the chauvinistic society. The birth of the feminist movement in the 19th century thereafter created a space for women to take the expression to a greater level of writing. This paper largely deals with women writing and their experiences. Further, the paper specifically focuses on how Indian women writers who chose to pen their experiences in a vibrant manner and chose the genre, novel, to convey what they wish to counter in this predominantly male dominated society. The final section deals with select Indian women novelists who through their works of art have conveyed their experiences so that the literary audience may understand the complexities they face and how they encounter them.
