Present research paper is concerned with the Planning Commission which came into existence on 15th March 1950 on the basis of a Government of India resolution adopted by honourable Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. With the objectives to help in the formulation of policies and creation of a strong Central Government-driven plan that would have great impact on the development of each of the States in the country. The year 2014, 16th Lok Sabah elections witnessed a new wave in the world largest democratic country which in January 2015 changes the name of Planning Commission as NITI Aayog. This paper examines and notes the similarities as well as differences in the aims and objectives of planning commission and NITI Aayog. Moreover, this article highlights the reason behind the transformation of planning commission into NITI Aayog.
