Title

A treatise on the decline of butterfly population and their ecological role as bio indicator of the environment

Authors

Abstract

Unplanned urbanization and several anthropogenic activities are responsible for decline mode of biodiversity. Healthy biological communities depend on insects as pollinators, seed dispersers, herbivores predator and prey. In the ecosystem the lower group of animals are considered to be highly sensitive to the environmental degradation. Butterflies are one of the most popular, easily recognized and divers groups of insects. Butterflies are used as important ecological indicator in different biological research field including navigation, pest control, embryology, mimicry, evolution, genetics, population dynamics and biodiversity conservation. Butterflies perform as primary consumer of the terrestrial food chain. Based on aesthetic values of butterfly many eco tourism projects are now in progress. Possible risk factors for butterfly population include habitat destruction, uncontrolled use of insecticides, soil pollution, light pollution and altered sugar, amino acid in nectar. Proper conservation strategy needs to increase the butterfly population by providing them natural habitat. Proper awareness campaigning in relation to time and dose of pesticides application in the agricultural field is also needed.
