Despite living in a patriarchal society, women writers fought for acceptance in the literary Women’s literature gained well-known importance by the end of the nineteenth century community. Adrienne Cecil Rich has earned a place in American literature as the leading feminist poet of the twentieth century. Most critics agree that she has achieved what no women writer has done before with a public voice. The centrality of female experience and the collective struggle of women have become increasingly significant in Rich’s poetry. Adrienne Rich has written more than twenty collections of poetry, many prose works and essays. She considers the poetic mantle as a woman and places it upon herself. She presents her poems from the perception of a woman searching an independent identity. This article focuses on the themes of feminism and search for an independent identity of women.
