Title

Role of Educatiom in Social Empowerment of Transgender/Hijras

Abstract

TG/Hijras have been subjected to exclusion (social, political and economic) and prejudice. They are exploited and abused by inconsiderate and evil elements of society but do not report the incidents to the police because feared of being further abused, exploited and tortured by the police. Though Transgender/Hijras are recognized as the third gender in our country, but they still do not get social acceptance. Hence there is an urgent need to enhance their social empowerment and it is only possible through education. The current study used qualitative methods for collecting and analysing data. The semi-structured interview schedule was adopted to collect data from a sample of 38 Transgender/Hijras in Lucknow. An in-depth interview, case study and two Focus Group Discussions with illiterate and literate Transgender/Hijras were conducted to gather in–depth information. The findings show literate Transgender/Hijras are more socially aware and empowered than illiterate Transgender/Hijras.
