Title

A Comparative Study of Memory (Quwat-e-Hafizah) in Individuals of Bilious and Phlegmatic Temperament.

Abstract

Abstract Background and Objective: Every individual has its unique temperament (Mizaj) which makes him different from the others. The object of this study is to compare the memory (Quwat-e-Hafizah) of Bilious (Safrawi) and Phlegmatic (Balghami) temperament. Methodology: This study was carried out in PG Lab Department of Kulliyat, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, AMU Aligarh during the year 2013-2016 .Two hundred (200) male and female volunteers in the age group of 20–35 years, having Bilious (Safravi) and Phlegmatic (Balghami) temperament were selected for the study, out of which 15 volunteers could not fulfill the inclusion criteria and hence were excluded out of the study and 185 volunteers were finally included in the study. The volunteers, suffering from any mental illness or depression were excluded from the study. The assessment of temperament of the volunteers was made on the basis of Ajnas-e-Ashra, mentioned in classical Unani literature. Results: It was revealed after this study that the mean of PGI Memory Scoring of bilious (Safravi) subjects was 75.85 with standard deviation of 2.69 whereas the mean of PGI Memory Scoring of phlegmatic (Balghami) subjects was 63.9 with standard deviation of 3.56. The Unpaired t-test was applied to test the significance of the result and it was found that the difference of PGI Memory scoring of Safravi (Bilious) subject and Balghami (Phlegmatic) subject was highly significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: From the findings of this study we can say that, the individuals having bilious (Safravi) temperament are mentally sharper than those of Phlegmatic temperament and have strong Quwat-e- hafizah (Memory).
