Groundwater samples are collected from different locations in and around Karaikal region and their physicochemical characteristics. The present investigation is focused on the determination of physicochemical parameters such as pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Hardness (TH), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Chlorides (Cl), Sulphate (SO4-2) and Nitrate (NO3) for Groundwater suitability for domestic and irrigation purposes to be examined by WHO and BIS standards. Thus, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the quality of groundwater especially in and around Karaikal region where groundwater is used for drinking and domestic purposes. Karaikal district is a growing tourism city of Puducherry Union Territory. Karaikal District is surrounded by Industries and the population is going on increasing there exists a demand for more quantity of water to be utilized and hence it is necessary to assess the quality of ground water.
