Abstract Cassia tora Linn. Leguminosae is an annual herbaceous fetid herb which is mostly found in South-East Asia and the South-West Pacific as an important weed. It is one of the recognized anthraquinone (organic compound) containing plants. The seeds and leaves constitute a valuable remedy in skin diseases, chiefly for ringworm and itch. As per Unani literature, the seeds of Cassia tora are Musaffi-e-khoon (Blood purifier) and Jali (Detergent) in action that is why used in skin diseases such as Judham (Leprosy), Quba (Ringworm), Bahaq (Pityriasis), Bars (Vitiligo) and Kalf (Melasma) internally as well as externally. Paste of leaves with lime-juice is used to treat vitiligo. Several chemical compounds such as anthraquinone, naphthopyrone glycosides, and phenolic compounds have been isolated from this plant. The aim of this review is to collect data about its medicinal uses described in Unani literature as well as ethnobotanical literature. Phytochemical and pharmacological studies of different parts of this plants which have been done in different parts of the world are also discussed.
