Title

Seasonal performances of few multivoltine and biovoltine races/breed of silkworm Bombyx mori (L.) and their selected hybrids

Abstract

Silkworm bombyx mori (L) four multivoltine races pre (precocity), npnd (non pigmented non diapause), C. nichi, Pure Mysore (hence denoted as PM) and four bivoltines C108, KA, NB4D2 and CSR2 were utilized to prepare eight hybrids - four regular hybrids PM x C108, PM x KA, PM x NB4D2 and PM x CSR2 and four reciprocal hybrids C108 x PM, KA x PM, NB4D2 x PM and CSR2 x PM were analyzed for twelve economic characters namely fecundity, hatching percentage, larval duration, larval weight, yield by number, yield by weight, cocoon weight, shell weight, shell percentage, length of the filament, pupation rate and renditta in three seasons of the year namely pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. It is found that expression of economic traits vary significantly from one another. A comparative picture on the effects of three periods on the expression of the characters understudy has revealed that the pre-monsoon season has no discernible effects on the expression of the traits studied. However, the monsoon season has influenced the expression of economic traits in the favorable direction. The post- monsoon season has intermediary effect on the expression of economic traits. The characters under study have responded differently among pure races/breed and their hybrids to different environmental conditions resulting in differential expression of the twelve traits in three periods.
