There is an abundance of information present over the internet and extracting the required information is a very cumbersome task. This enhances the research work in the field of automatic text summarization (making text shorter in length) using various strategies. The reason behind doing this survey is to gain more knowledge regarding, how one can save his time to search for valuable information in a limited time span. There are two ways to perform summarization. The abstract method of summarization requires the reading of whole data first, which is a cumbersome task. Therefore, extractive methods are gaining attention as they perform summarization side by side while reading the document. In addition to this, coherence is also important as it provides relative information in a useful manner. Some researchers have focused on summarization while others have taken care of coherence only. This paper compares their relative approaches. Recent research has focused on both using a better technology using the heading-based summarization strategy which summarizes the text up to one-third of the original length. In this paper, prevalent summarization techniques have been discussed along with their comparative analysis.
