Title

Challenges Faced by Elderly and Disabled users in Shopping Malls in India

Authors

Abstract

Abstract Elderly and disabled persons in India are facing face challenges related to accomplish daily activities such as moving around, communicating and performing social roles. Social participation means elderly and disabled, who live within their community and interact with others. Commercial complexes and shopping malls are those public spaces which used by people for several purposes. Here, all elements of the social and physical environment interact and have an impact on social participation. This study is trying to provide a multi-perspective assessment of the usability, as well as problems related to social participation in shopping complexes in India. The results also suggest necessary improvements. We interviewed persons with disabilities, rehabilitation professionals and shopkeepers. Participants viewed the mall as a multifunctional place for everyday use, but at times, also as a limiting place. Multiple facilitators and obstacles were identified; the most important were interaction with shopkeepers and the mall's design for mobility or way finding. Multiple stakeholders’ perceptions provide a basis for further investigation about needed changes and their potential for making malls more welcoming and inclusive to all. Keywords: Accessibility, facilities; person with disabilities (pwds); shopping malls, India
