Title

Share and Growth of Elderly Population by Place of Their Residence in India and Tamil Nadu State

Abstract

Demographically speaking almost all countries around the World in near future are going to experience the major challenge of aging population, viz., increase in the share and growth of the aged population (60 or 65 years and above) in the total population. Of course, some of the more developed countries are already started to face such phenomenon, but they are managing the situation in less difficult manner as their actual older population number is somewhat manageable according to their countries total population. On the other hand, in almost all less developed countries that too in countries like China, India and several other south-east and southern Asian countries as well as large African countries, the actual old age populations are going to be very large and thereby, these counties have to face several problems related to aging of their populations. In fact, by 2050 many of the less developed countries are likely to transform into the societies of aged persons. Aging of population is taking place mainly because of the drastic decline in the levels of fertility and mortality and thereby, tremendous increase in the expectation of life of male and female population. In view of this phenomenon, issues related to aging are becoming important in Indian context. With this background, in this paper an attempt is made to know the share and growth rates of Aging Population by their place of residence in India and Tamil Nadu.
