Protectionism is a situation in which one Country limits its trade with another country by imposing tariffs and quotas on imported goods. These steps are taken by a Government to safeguard its domestic industry. But of late these steps have been used as a tool to settle geo-political scores and to stop the free flow of trade. Whereas on the other hand Free Trade Agreements are the one which facilitate free trade between two countries through opening up of markets and lowering of tariffs. But this has resulted in increased pressure on domestic industries. In present scenario USA under Donald Trump’s presidency has become proactive in the field of protectionism and this has manifested itself in USA-China trade war. This paper attempts to study the impact of protectionist steps taken by EU, USA in relation to Indian products and whether Free Trade Agreements are living up to the expectations?
