Title

Physical Vulnerability Analysis: A case study at Sagar Island of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

Abstract

Vulnerability is multi-dimensional concept which is used in the present day context in terms of community’s exposures to the nature. Physical, social, economic and even environmental vulnerability destroyed the balance between physical environment and cultural environment of the society. Sagar Island is situated at the mouth of the Hugli estuary in the South West portion of the Indian Sundarban. This Island divides the mouth of the Hugli estuary by two tidal rivers namely Muri Ganga or Hugli river on the west and Borotala river in the East. Southern part of this Island is facing towards the Bay of Bengal. Due to its physical location and influence of the coastal bio-geomorphological processes and low physiographic nature the Island it becomes physically more vulnerable to the coastal communities. Huge population pressure, tropical cyclone, embankment breaching and coastal flooding causes the entire Sagar Island physically very vulnerable throughout the year the people of the Island are facing so many obstacles from the nature. The present research paper tries to explain the nature of physical vulnerability of Sagar Island of South 24 Parganas along the mouth of the Hoogly estuary and proper management of options for the people of this coastal block.

Key Words

Physical vulnerability, coastal erosion, insularity index, embankment breaching, livelihood, food security.
