Title

Prevalence rate of depression among higher secondary school going adolescent of Imphal west district, Manipur

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to find out the prevalence rate of depressive disorder among school going adolescents of Imphal West Districts of Manipur. Objectives: 1) To find out the prevalence rate of depression of the study samples. 2) To examine the relationship between gender and depression of the study samples. 3) To compare the level of depression between Government and Private Higher Secondary School students. Results: Out of the 306 study samples of Adolescents, 71 were found to be depressed with a percentage of 23% and 235 cases were found to have no sign of depression with a percentage 77%. Regarding gender, the mean score of depression of male and female gender were 12.01 and 11.19, respectively. Statistically, when applied t-test, it was found that there were no significant relationship between gender and depression as manifest by p-value = 0.462. In case of type of school management, school going adolescents of government school were more depressed (28%) than the adolescents of private school (18%). When applied chi-square test it was found to be significant differences between the types of school management and depressive symptoms as manifest by p-value = 0.042. Conclusion: In the present study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the prevalence rate of depression among school going adolescents of Imphal West Districts of Manipur. Depression among adolescents has been recognized as a major public health issue. It often results in suicide, school drop-out, pregnancy, antisocial behavior, substance abuse, etc. In the present study, prevalence rate of depression of school going adolescents of Imphal west Districts are found to 23%.
