CONSTRUCTIVISM: A PARADIGM SHIFT FROM TEACHER-CENTRED TO LEARNER-CENTRED EDUCATION

Abstract

In the eyes of an educator, each and every individual with different cultural backgrounds, unique individual disposition and interest, is unique and precious. In order to pursue new knowledge, a teacher should consider a learner’s unique way of learning and analyzing the new informations. This concept gives rise to the need of learner centered education. Looking into the issue, the present paper reflects on the various aspects of classroom management skills to encourage learner centered education. Pondering upon the way in which teaching is conducted and how a learning process works, the concept of student centered learning has come up as an emerging and effective technique in the teaching learning process. The paper also discusses the various criterias under which the efficiency of a learning environment can be assessed. It presents a comparative analysis of the concept of student centered approach and learner centered approach and focuses upon the new ways of teaching practices and skills supported under the same. In today’s scenario,where more emphasis is given on quality learning, there is a colossal shift of educational environment from teacher centered education towards student centered education. The learner centered education is basically an instructional practice where the learners are taught the ability and skills to analyze and understand the facts at their own pace and construct their knowledge on their own i.e. where the complete learning experience is focused on the learner. Identifying the methods of learner centered education, the discussion moves ahead to the theory of CONSTRUCTIVISM. A constructive approach in an educational scenario,can be considered as a paradigm shift of teaching process from teacher centered to learner centered environment. The paper has made an attempt to show the feasibility of constructivism as a viable learning theory in the present context, as, here the students are not a passive learner rather they participate as actively involved participants where they actively question, challenge, examine and explore the informations on their own. Highlighting the various aspects of constructivist learning and its benefits from the perspective of active learning the paper brings into light the concept of 5-E instructional model based on the theory of constructivism. A constructivist classroom supports 5-E instructional model. As per this model, the student has to undergo the following phases of learning during the concept building process. They are engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration and evaluation.In a nutshell, the paper examines the various dimensions of implementing the constructivist approach in present day classroom and that the practice of conducting constructivist classroom to encourage learner centered educational practice should not be left upon the mere discretion of few reflective teacher
